FedExForum Roof Replacement Project Reaches Substantial Completion

Building Technology Consultants, Inc. (BTC) is pleased to announce the FedExForum roof replacement has been substantially completed.  12 months and nearly 225,000 fasteners and plates later, the approximately 150,000 square foot roof at the dome has been replaced.

Built in early 2000, The FedExForum is home to Memphis Grizzlies and many other events.  Its main arena has a dome roof exceeding 400 feet in diameter.

BTC was originally retained to perform an evaluation of the existing roofing system at this iconic structure in Memphis, Tennessee to assess its condition and to evaluate options for repair and/or replacement.  BTC’s evaluation included a visual review of the dome structure, high-voltage leak detection testing to assess the number, pattern, and extent of roofing membrane breaches, and an infrared thermographic survey using a drone equipped with an infrared imager.  BTC then developed options to address the ongoing roofing issues and investigated various roofing systems for a roof membrane replacement project.  This project posed several challenges including logistical limitations, and requirements to meet FM Global criteria.

After assisting the ownership with the selection of the most appropriate roof repair/replacement scheme for the project, BTC was retained to develop repair documents for the roof membrane replacement, which included complete tear off along the perimeters, and a roof membrane recover at the center of the dome.  During the design phase, BTC worked closely with the specified roofing system manufacturer and FM Global to ensure the recover and new roof sections meet all FM Global requirements.

BTC also provided bidding assistance and construction phase services throughout the roof replacement work.

Although the Memphis Grizzlies were not able to finish their regular season under this impressive new roof, we hope we get the chance to see them, as well as a number of more events, at this venue for years to come.
